Kankakee County, IL – Two children were critically injured after a DUI crash on Route 17 in Kankakee County.

According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. Friday to the 3700 block of East Illinois Route 17 after receiving an automated crash alert from a mobile phone.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a dark-colored pickup truck partially submerged in nearly two feet of water in a creek. Authorities said the vehicle was operated by 58-year-old Phyllis A. Moses of Pembroke Township and was occupied by two young children at the time of the crash.

Deputies immediately focused on removing the occupants and ensuring their safety amid cold water and overnight temperatures. Incidents involving submerged vehicles can present life-threatening risks due to hypothermia and rapid water exposure.

Moses was transported to a local hospital, where she was subsequently arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the sheriff’s office.

The two children were taken to a Chicago-area hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Route 17 is a key east-west corridor in the area, and early morning crashes can affect commuters and shift workers traveling through the region.

The investigation remains ongoing. All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
