Kankakee County, IL – A former office building in Bourbonnais is set to be demolished after Riverside Healthcare determined the structure is no longer viable for reuse, citing significant environmental and structural concerns.

According to Riverside Healthcare, the property—located adjacent to its Health Fitness Center in Bourbonnais, Kankakee County, within the greater Chicago metro region—was donated last year and previously operated as a Cigna facility. After months of evaluation and cleanup efforts, officials concluded that removing the building is the most practical path forward.

Riverside Healthcare President and CEO Phil Kambic said the organization explored multiple options to salvage and repurpose the structure for community use. However, remediation costs were deemed too high due to extensive mold, water damage, and years of non-use. While the building’s exterior appears intact, internal conditions have deteriorated significantly.

Village of Bourbonnais Mayor Jeff Keast supported the decision, noting Riverside’s collaboration with local officials and experts throughout the review process. He said the village looks forward to future development plans for the site.

The healthcare system has not yet announced what will replace the building but confirmed that redevelopment plans are expected later this year. Riverside operates more than 40 facilities across Kankakee, Iroquois, Will, and Grundy counties.

Officials say the demolition clears the way for new opportunities that could better serve the region’s healthcare and community needs.
