Chicago, IL – A blustery Sunday is underway across the Chicago area and nearby regions, with gusty winds and a heightened brush fire risk affecting areas particularly near Kankakee. Northwest winds are forecasted to reach 40 mph, posing hazards for local residents and travelers. The National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago issued a warning early Sunday, urging caution for those near grasslands, especially south and west of Dixon along the Kankakee, IL line.

According to the NWS, strong winds will last through Sunday night, increasing the likelihood of grass and brush fires in dry areas. Residents are advised to avoid open flames and exercise caution when disposing of cigarettes and other fire hazards. The risk for fire spread is significantly elevated due to the dry conditions combined with high winds.

In addition to fire concerns, gusty winds may impact travel, with risks of light objects being blown onto roadways. Local authorities warn drivers to secure loose items and prepare for slowed traffic, particularly along Interstate 57 and other major roadways. Boaters are also advised to avoid Lake Michigan due to high waves and hazardous conditions along the shoreline.

The NWS also forecasts cooling temperatures through midweek, with overnight lows dipping as the week progresses. Monday will bring lake effect showers, continuing into Tuesday, further decreasing temperatures into the 30s by midweek. Frost is likely by Wednesday morning, particularly in rural areas outside the city, signaling the start of fall’s chill.
