Kankakee, IL – Kankakee County Emergency Management officials are reminding residents to take precautions to secure their phones, tablets, and laptops as part of a local cyber safety campaign.
In a post shared Tuesday, the Kankakee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) urged the public to treat personal devices like valuables, noting that smartphones often hold sensitive information including banking data and private communications.
The agency encouraged residents to follow cybersecurity best practices, including keeping software updated, enabling screen locks and encryption, avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities, and disabling Bluetooth when not in use. Officials also recommended installing antivirus software and staying aware of one’s surroundings to prevent theft.
The alert included links to resources from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and National Cybersecurity Alliance, all offering step-by-step guides to safeguard personal technology.
Officials emphasized that taking small preventive measures can significantly reduce risks from hacking, identity theft, and data loss.
