Kankakee, IL – The Kankakee County Board has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reaffirming its commitment to supporting survivors and promoting prevention efforts throughout the community.
The proclamation, signed on October 14, 2025, by County Board Chairman Matthew Alexander-Hildebrand and County Clerk Dan Hendrickson, recognizes domestic violence as “a deeply personal and painful reality for countless individuals” that affects families, children, and communities across all backgrounds.
In partnership with Harbor House, a local nonprofit that has served victims of domestic violence in Kankakee and Iroquois Counties for over 45 years, the board highlighted the organization’s role in providing shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, and education. The proclamation also honors survivors for their courage and resilience, stating that “help is available, healing is possible, and no one has to face abuse alone.”
Harbor House leaders, including Executive Director Jenny Schoenwetter and Board President John Fitts, joined county officials during the signing ceremony. The organization thanked the board for its continued support and encouraged residents to learn, speak out, and help build “a stronger, safer, and more compassionate community for all.”
Throughout October, Harbor House will host educational events and awareness initiatives across the county.
