Kankakee, IL – Kankakee Community College (KCC) has launched a new solar array, designed to reduce energy costs and enhance student learning in renewable energy technology. The solar array, financed by Dr. Sarode Pundaleeka and the Illinois Solar for All program, was commemorated on Sept. 25 in a ceremony attended by college officials and partners from Renewable Energy Evolution, LLC.

According to KCC officials, the 950-kilowatt array will generate over 1,300 megawatt hours of clean energy annually, accounting for 8% of the campus’s electricity use. Brian Maillet, CEO of Renewable Energy Evolution, LLC, highlighted the system’s environmental and financial benefits, projecting $84,000 in savings within the first year alone.

The solar array, which covers 2.5 acres, also serves as a learning tool for KCC students pursuing degrees and certificates in renewable energy. The installation aligns with KCC’s sustainability goals and features native plantings to support pollinators, enhancing the array’s environmental impact.

KCC anticipates saving over $2.8 million throughout the solar array’s 25-year lifespan, ensuring long-term energy efficiency for the campus.
