Minooka, Illinois – Drivers across parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana could face slick, snow-covered roads Saturday as light snowfall combines with bitter cold to create hazardous travel conditions throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for Grundy and Kankakee counties in Illinois and Jasper and Newton counties in Indiana. Snowfall totals are expected to remain modest, generally between 1 and 2 inches, but temperatures in the single digits to lower teens will limit the effectiveness of road treatments.

Communities including Morris, Minooka, Coal City, Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Rensselaer, DeMotte, and Kentland are expected to see periods of light snow, especially from late morning into the afternoon. Even minor accumulation may quickly compact into icy patches, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and ramps.

State transportation crews will be monitoring conditions, but officials warn that snow removal will be challenging due to the extreme cold. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Those who can delay non-essential trips are encouraged to do so.

Road conditions are available through the Illinois Department of Transportation and Indiana’s 511 system. The advisory is expected to expire Saturday evening, though isolated slick spots could linger into the night as temperatures remain well below freezing.
