Kankakee, IL – A juvenile male and an adult female were injured Thursday night during a shooting at Crestlane Apartments in Kankakee.
According to the Kankakee Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:32 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the complex located at 200 Crestlane Drive. Upon arrival, they encountered a large, agitated crowd and learned that both victims had already been transported to a local hospital by private vehicle. The juvenile male was later airlifted to a Chicago hospital for advanced medical care, while the adult female remains hospitalized locally.
Preliminary investigation indicates the incident began as a dispute over parking spaces between residents. Police said the argument allegedly escalated into a physical altercation involving multiple individuals, during which a firearm was discharged. Officers recovered a firearm from a nearby apartment and determined that its occupants allegedly did not possess valid Firearm Owner’s Identification cards.
Two individuals were detained for questioning, and investigators have identified a suspect they are working to take into custody. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives reviewing surveillance footage and conducting interviews to determine the involvement of any additional parties.
“This was a reckless act of violence that endangered numerous lives, including that of a young child,” Chief of Police Chris Kidwell said in a statement. “Our officers responded swiftly, secured the scene, and worked through the night to identify those responsible.”
