Kane County, IL – A Kane County jury has found a Pingree Grove man guilty of first-degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death, concluding a multi-agency investigation that began after a missing person case in McHenry County turned deadly.
According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Douglas Ottesen was convicted of First-Degree Murder, a Class M felony, and Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a Class 3 felony, following a jury trial. The verdict was announced this week.
Prosecutors said the case stemmed from an April 4, 2024, investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department into a resident who had last been seen alive on March 12, 2024, while attempting to travel to Florida to visit family. Investigators determined the circumstances surrounding the disappearance were likely criminal and obtained search warrants for locations in Kane County.
On May 7, 2024, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies assisted Crystal Lake police while executing a search warrant at a property in the 45W200 block of Illinois Route 72 in Hampshire Township. At the same time, investigators searched a residence in the 600 block of North Falls Circle in Pingree Grove.
Authorities said human remains, later identified as James Cromwell, age 57, of Crystal Lake, were discovered at the Route 72 property. The remains were found inside a makeshift wooden box wrapped in a tarp, covered in lime powder, with the victim’s hands bound and eyes taped.
An autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Ottesen’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 10, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom 211 at the Kane County Judicial Center. He faces a potential sentence ranging from 45 years to life in prison and remains in custody at the Kane County Jail.
