Geneva, IL – A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for driving the getaway car in a deadly 2022 shooting in Aurora, Kane County officials announced Friday.
According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Alonzo Sanchez agreed to the 25-year sentence in exchange for pleading guilty to first-degree murder, a Class M felony. Judge Barsanti accepted the plea in Kane County court.
According to prosecutors, the case stems from a violent confrontation on September 24, 2022, when Sanchez drove a white sedan to the 300 block of Center Avenue in Aurora. Prosecutors say passenger Samuel Garcia allegedly stepped out holding a silver revolver, confronted two men, yelled gang slogans, and opened fire—shooting one victim in the face and arm. The second man, Ferrer Velasquez, attempted to flee but fell. Garcia allegedly stood over him and shot him twice in the head.
Velasquez died at the scene. The other victim survived after being taken to a local hospital.
According to investigators, the violence occurred just moments after Velasquez and the surviving victim had intervened when a juvenile was being harassed by Garcia and others in the sedan. The Aurora Police Department later identified the vehicle and linked it to Garcia and Sanchez.
Sanchez must serve the full sentence under Illinois law and receives credit for two years and 325 days served in the Kendall County jail.
Garcia, the accused gunman, was convicted by a Kane County jury on October 31 of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. His sentencing is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Anderson said the sentence brings “some measure of justice” to the victims and credited Aurora detectives and community witnesses for helping secure the convictions.
