St. Charles, IL – An Aurora man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a violent knife attack, according to Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser.

Prosecutors announced Friday that Duka M. Smith pleaded guilty to Armed Violence, a Class X felony, and agreed to the sentence in exchange for his plea. Judge David Kliment approved the agreement.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland, the attack occurred on November 12, 2023, after Smith and the victim had a disagreement inside an apartment. When the confrontation escalated, Smith allegedly began stabbing the victim with a knife.

The victim tried to escape into a parking lot, but Smith allegedly followed, stabbing him repeatedly in the head, face, chest, and abdomen. The brutal assault was captured on video surveillance.

Authorities said the victim, though seriously injured, managed to stumble away and was later found bleeding. He has since recovered.

Under Illinois law, Smith will be eligible for day-for-day sentencing and will receive credit for 588 days served in Kane County Jail.

In a statement, Orland said the court’s sentence “rightly reflects the gravity of his crimes and ensures he is held accountable.” She praised the victim’s courage, Victim Advocate Sheila Gray for her support, and the Aurora Police Department for its swift response.
