ST. CHARLES, IL – Four former Campton Hills police officers, including the village’s former police chief, have been indicted on felony charges tied to the alleged unlawful sale of firearms held in police custody, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to prosecutors, the indictments—unsealed Wednesday—stem from a multi-year investigation involving the Illinois State Police Special Investigations Division. Authorities allege that between January 2018 and February 2023, firearms stored in the department’s evidence room were unlawfully sold, with reports falsified or altered to conceal the transactions.

All four defendants—former Chief Steven Millar, former Officers Scott Coryell and Daniel Hatt, and current Officer Douglas Kucik—surrendered to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week. They were released under supervision pending trial and are prohibited from possessing firearms or leaving the state without court approval.

Millar, 60, faces 41 counts, including money laundering, forgery, theft, and misconduct. Coryell, 57, faces 10 counts, Hatt, 65, faces 6 counts, and Kucik, 42, faces 7 counts, according to court records. The next court appearance for all four is scheduled for December 12, 2025, at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly said the investigation underscores that “the public must be able to trust that those charged with enforcing the law are also upholding the law.”

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
