Aurora, IL – A Christmas Day house fire in Aurora displaced residents after flames tore through a two-story home Thursday afternoon, prompting a large emergency response from the Aurora Fire Department.

According to the Aurora Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday to the 1900 block of Sedgwick Trail following multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting visible flames coming from the residence. Due to the volume of calls, the incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm while crews were en route.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the side of the two-story single-family home, with thick smoke pushing from the roof eaves. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior before advancing hose lines inside the home and to the second floor.

A total of four engine companies, two truck companies, three medic units, and two chief officers responded, with 26 personnel on scene. Firefighters also ventilated the roof, conducted search operations, and performed exterior overhaul. The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes.

All residents safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported. However, due to significant fire damage, the home was declared uninhabitable. Fire crews remained on scene to assist residents in retrieving personal belongings and to secure the property.

Utility companies ComEd and Nicor were requested to shut off services to the home.

“This was a fast-moving fire with challenging access conditions, but our crews worked quickly to stop it from spreading further,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel. He also noted that structure fires tend to increase during winter months and encouraged residents to check smoke alarms and stay alert to home fire risks.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone seeking additional information is encouraged to contact the Aurora Fire Department at (630) 256-4000.
