Aurora, IL – What began as a routine house fire call turned into a major drug bust in Aurora this week after police uncovered a large cannabis grow operation inside a residence on Ashwood Lane.
According to the Aurora Police Department, officers and firefighters responded to a reported fire on September 13 at around 7:23 a.m. Fire crews quickly contained small flames near the home’s entrance before they spread further. While investigating, firefighters reportedly noticed signs of a cannabis grow operation in the basement and alerted responding officers.
A protective sweep revealed hundreds of cannabis plants, grow lights, and altered electrical equipment. Police detained the two residents: 32-year-old Ryan P. Prey, identified as the homeowner, and his 20-year-old male roommate. Prey allegedly had visible injuries from a separate incident in Chicago earlier that day, though police noted those injuries were unrelated to the fire.
A search warrant executed later that day led to the seizure of:
- 330 cannabis plants
- 23,586 grams of cannabis (just under 52 pounds)
- Packaging materials, equipment, and multiple cell phones
Prosecutors charged Prey with three felony counts: manufacture/delivery of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis (Class X), producing or possessing more than 200 cannabis plants (Class 1), and possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis (Class 1). The 20-year-old roommate was released without charges.
“This case shows how routine calls for service can uncover far more serious threats,” Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement, praising the teamwork that prevented the fire from spreading while dismantling a large-scale illegal grow.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Aurora Police Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.
