Charleston, WV – Fire risks are elevated across West Virginia today, but the bigger concern arrives overnight as temperatures plunge below freezing, threatening plants and creating early morning hazards.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, dry conditions combined with low relative humidity and breezy winds will increase fire danger through the afternoon, especially between noon and 6 p.m. Temperatures will reach the upper 40s to low 50s, with winds helping fires spread quickly if ignited.

Communities including Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and Parkersburg face an increased risk of wildfire activity, particularly near dry brush and wooded areas. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as conditions can allow flames to spread rapidly.

By late evening, conditions shift sharply as temperatures fall into the 30s by midnight and drop further into the 25°F to 32°F range by 5 to 7 a.m. Wednesday. This widespread freeze could damage sensitive vegetation and create isolated slick spots on untreated roads and bridges.

Residents should avoid burning today, secure any ignition sources, and take steps to protect plants overnight. Warmer conditions return Wednesday afternoon, but additional alerts may be issued if dry weather continues.
