London, Kanawha County, WV – A fatal crash Tuesday evening along East Dupont Avenue left a 65-year-old woman dead and a young child injured, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

According to deputies, the crash occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 10000 block of East Dupont Avenue in London, West Virginia, located in Kanawha County, southeast of Charleston. Investigators say a white Kia Optima was traveling westbound when it pulled to the right side of the roadway and briefly stopped.

Deputies said the Kia then attempted to make a U-turn back onto the roadway and was struck by a westbound pickup truck, causing a collision with the driver’s side of the Kia.

The driver of the Kia was identified as Sharon Williams, 65, of Hansford, West Virginia. According to the sheriff’s office, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also inside the Kia was a 6-year-old child, who was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies said the child was not using a booster seat, as required by law, and was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash.

The two occupants of the pickup truck were transported by Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority crews for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.

At this time, no charges are expected to be filed, and the crash remains under investigation by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office reminded drivers of the importance of properly restraining children in age- and size-appropriate car seats or booster seats, and ensuring children are seated in the correct area of the vehicle.

Thoughts and prayers were extended to the victim’s family and loved ones.
