Kalamazoo, MI – A police search unfolded in Kalamazoo County this afternoon after a stolen Jeep crashed and two suspects fled on foot. Deputies have since confirmed the incident does not pose an ongoing threat to the community.
According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 3:03 p.m. to reports of a red Jeep driving erratically on East VW Avenue. The Jeep struck a tree before the male driver and female passenger allegedly abandoned the vehicle and ran into a nearby cornfield.
Deputies initially believed the suspects were attempting to retrieve a firearm case but later determined the item was a guitar case. A duffle bag was also recovered during the search. Authorities quickly confirmed the Jeep had been reported stolen out of the City of Portage.
The sheriff’s office launched a coordinated response with help from the Portage Department of Public Safety, South County Fire, and Great Lakes Drone Services. K9 units and drones were deployed to track the suspects, but after an extensive search, they were not located.
Deputies are now clearing the scene and stress that the public is not in immediate danger. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 383-8748 or provide an anonymous tip to Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100.
