Kaktovik, Alaska – Life-threatening blizzard conditions continue along Alaska’s Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast today, with whiteouts, strong winds, and dangerous travel expected through Sunday morning.

Blowing snow and powerful winds are the primary hazards, as gusts reach up to 45 mph across the coast from Point Thomson to Flaxman Island and Kaktovik. While new snowfall amounts are relatively light, generally up to one inch, the combination of falling and blowing snow is sharply reducing visibility to one-quarter mile or less at times. These conditions are creating true blizzard criteria and making outdoor travel extremely dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service office in Fairbanks, the Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. AKST Sunday. Winds will continue to whip loose snow into frequent whiteouts, especially in exposed coastal areas and along ice roads. Visibility may drop suddenly, making it difficult to orient or seek shelter in time.

Local emergency officials urge residents to delay all non-essential travel. Even short trips can become life-threatening in whiteout conditions, particularly with extreme wind chill values developing overnight. Anyone who must go outside should dress in full winter protection and ensure others know their location and plans.

Marine and coastal operations should remain secured, as blowing snow and strong winds will continue to impact visibility and safety near the shoreline. According to forecasters, conditions are expected to slowly improve after sunrise Sunday as winds gradually ease.

Residents are advised to secure loose items, check emergency supplies, and avoid exposure during peak wind periods overnight.
