Minneapolis, MN – A dangerous heat wave is gripping Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota heading into the July 4th holiday, with heat index values soaring near 102°F and advisories stretching into Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Twin Cities, Duluth, and Aberdeen, much of the Upper Midwest will face oppressive humidity and high temperatures between noon and 8 p.m. Friday. Counties under advisories include Hennepin, Ramsey, Cass, and St. Louis in Minnesota; Douglas, Ashland, and Sawyer in Wisconsin; and Brown, Roberts, and Spink in South Dakota.
Cities such as Minneapolis, Duluth, Superior, Aberdeen, and Hayward are expected to see heat index values from 94°F to 102°F. The hottest conditions on Thursday are targeting western Minnesota and northeast South Dakota, while Friday brings the peak risk to the Twin Cities, northern Minnesota, and Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat, use air conditioning, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Outdoor workers should schedule frequent breaks and recognize early signs of heat stroke.
The heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday, with additional warnings possible if high humidity lingers into the weekend.
