Phoenix, Arizona – Drivers along Interstate 10 near Chiriaco Summit could face sudden crosswinds up to 40 mph through midnight, raising the risk of difficult travel and blowing dust across the Southern California desert.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 12 a.m. PST Friday for the western portion of Joshua Tree National Park, the Chuckwalla Mountains and Chiriaco Summit. West winds will range from 15 to 25 mph, with peak gusts reaching 40 mph during the late afternoon and evening hours.

The strongest impacts are expected along exposed stretches of I-10 and higher elevations near Cottonwood Visitor Center and Lost Horse-Keys Village. High-profile vehicles, including RVs and tractor-trailers, may struggle to maintain lane control in crosswinds. Light, unsecured outdoor items could be blown away.

Blowing dust and sand may briefly reduce visibility to under one mile in open desert areas, especially near Imperial Hot Mineral Springs and along desert roadways.

Drivers are urged to slow down, keep both hands on the wheel and allow extra stopping distance. The advisory remains in effect until midnight, and additional statements could be issued if winds intensify.
