Joliet, IL – Drivers in Joliet should expect major traffic changes Saturday, September 13, as the Mexican Independence Day Parade takes place on Collins Street at 1 p.m.

According to the Joliet Police Department, Collins Street will be fully closed between Columbia Street and Cass Street from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the parade route. Additional closures will affect Collins Street from Williamson Avenue to Columbia Street and Jackson Street from Collins to Henderson Avenue for local traffic only. Police warn that heavy pedestrian traffic is expected in the area.

Parade staging will begin at 11 a.m. on streets north of Ohio Street between State and Collins. Ohio Street itself will also be closed in that area starting late morning. Officers will be stationed throughout downtown to direct traffic and ensure event security.

Detours are in place for both northbound and southbound Collins Street traffic. From the north, drivers will be rerouted to Williamson Avenue, Henderson Avenue, and Cass Street. From the south, detours will follow Cass Street, Henderson Avenue, and Williamson Avenue before reconnecting with Collins Street.

Normal access to on-street parking in surrounding neighborhoods will remain available. Police also announced certified drone pilots will use aerial monitoring for safety compliance, in accordance with Illinois law.

Officials encourage parade attendees to report suspicious activity by calling 911 and remind motorists to allow extra travel time.
