JOLIET, Ill. – Light winds and dry fall weather created perfect conditions Thursday for the Forest Preserve District of Will County to launch its annual prescribed burn season, beginning with a controlled fire at the Sugar Creek Administration Center and Preserve. Crews in yellow fire gear carefully ignited prairie grasses under sunny skies to manage vegetation and restore native habitat.

According to forest preserve officials, prescribed burns are a key land management tool used throughout northern Illinois each fall and spring. The controlled fires help reduce invasive plant growth, recycle nutrients back into the soil, and stimulate the regrowth of native wildflowers and grasses. The practice also lessens wildfire risk by safely removing built-up fuel under monitored conditions.

The National Weather Service in Chicago reports that mild, dry air and light breezes made Thursday’s conditions favorable for burns, with temperatures in the upper 60s and humidity levels around 40%. Such weather allows smoke to disperse effectively while keeping flames manageable. Crews remain on-site during and after burns to ensure complete containment.

Officials remind nearby residents that prescribed burns are planned events conducted under strict safety guidelines and permits. Controlled fires are expected to continue across Will County preserves over the next several weeks, depending on weather and air quality conditions.
