Chicago, Illinois – Showers and thunderstorms could move across northern Illinois as early as Thursday afternoon, with gusty winds and rapidly changing temperatures impacting major roadways before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a series of spring-like storm systems will move through the region tonight into Thursday. Rain chances increase to 50 to 70 percent Thursday, with thunderstorms most likely during the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures will climb into the upper 50s and mid-60s before colder air arrives late Thursday night.

Interstate 90 through Chicago and Rockford, Interstate 88 near Aurora and Interstate 55 toward Joliet could see periods of reduced visibility and ponding on roadways during heavier showers. Gusty southwest winds may reach 40 mph at times, creating difficult travel for high-profile vehicles along open stretches of highway.

Behind the system, temperatures will fall sharply Friday, with highs dropping into the upper 30s to mid-40s. A brief rain-snow mix is possible north of Interstate 80 early Friday as colder air filters in, though significant accumulation is not expected at this time.

Drivers should plan for wet roads Thursday afternoon and remain alert for changing weather conditions. Additional advisories may be issued if storms strengthen or winds intensify during peak travel hours.
