Joliet, IL Drivers in Will County should prepare for an overnight traffic shift on westbound Interstate 80 later this week.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the work is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, between Interstate 55 and Ridge Road. At least one lane will remain open to drivers while crews implement the new traffic configuration.

The lanes that close overnight will reopen by 6 a.m. Friday, when the new traffic pattern officially takes effect. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain alert while adjusting to the shift.

The work is part of IDOT’s ongoing I-80 improvement project aimed at modernizing the busy corridor and improving safety. The multi-year effort includes rebuilding bridges, widening lanes, and replacing outdated infrastructure to better handle heavy truck and commuter traffic.

IDOT officials reminded drivers to slow down and use caution in all work zones, noting that speed limits will be reduced in the construction area. Delays are possible, especially during peak travel times following the shift.
