House Springs, MO – A 73-year-old House Springs man has been charged following a triple shooting that left two women critically injured and the suspect hospitalized after authorities say he shot himself as deputies confronted him.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Winkelman, 73, of House Springs, has been charged with two counts of Assault in the First Degree and two counts of Armed Criminal Action. Prosecutors have issued a no-bond warrant, and Winkelman remains in custody while receiving treatment at a local hospital in critical condition.
According to investigators, Winkelman allegedly walked to a neighboring residence and began questioning people gathered there about activities at the home. After a comment made by a 38-year-old woman, authorities allege Winkelman pulled out a firearm and shot her in the head.
Investigators allege the woman’s 17-year-old daughter attempted to provide first aid to her mother before she was also shot in the head. Authorities said a third person was allegedly chased by Winkelman while he was armed but was not struck by gunfire.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responding to the scene quickly learned the suspect was outside his own residence. As deputies approached and confronted him, authorities allege Winkelman shot himself in the head.
Detectives who were already in nearby Cedar Hill working an unrelated homicide investigation responded to assist. Investigators said numerous witnesses have provided information, and authorities believe Winkelman had ongoing frustrations regarding activity at the neighboring residence.
Officials emphasized there is no indication the shooting is connected to the separate Cedar Hill homicide investigation.
The investigation remains active. Authorities remind the public that criminal charges are allegations, and Winkelman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
