Jefferson County, MO – A De Soto man is facing charges after a fatal shooting on Saturday.
Sheriff Dave Marshak announced that 23-year-old Caleb Hawkins is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Investigators believe Hawkins shot and killed Joel Kessler, 45, of Imperial, in Hawkins’ home on Victoria Station Road.
The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Hawkins allegedly fired a handgun, killing Kessler and injuring a second person. Kessler was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim suffered minor injuries.
Deputies took Hawkins into custody without further incident and transported him to the Jefferson County Jail. Hawkins is being held without bond.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Trisha Stefanski’s office for quickly pursuing warrants. Officials believe this was an isolated incident and stated there is no danger to the public.
This investigation remains active, and authorities continue gathering evidence related to the case. Hawkins faces a potential life sentence if convicted.
