Rensselaer, IN – A 32-year-old Rensselaer woman was injured Friday morning after being struck by a semi-truck on U.S. 231, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said deputies were dispatched around 9:12 a.m. just south of County Road 1050 South, where they found Patricia P. Putts injured along the roadway. Emergency medical crews treated her at the scene before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Her condition has not been released.
According to Chief Deputy Jason Wallace, the driver of the semi, 48-year-old Maurice A. Coleman of Forney, Texas, was hauling an oversized load northbound on U.S. 231. Deputies reported the truck’s load extended more than four feet on both the right and left sides of the trailer.
Coleman allegedly told deputies he saw Putts walking northbound along the east side of the roadway but could not maneuver the semi to the west side without risking a collision with southbound traffic. He reported the extended load struck Putts as he passed.
The sheriff’s office stated the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.
The section of U.S. 231 where the crash occurred is a two-lane rural highway with limited shoulder space, a factor investigators are considering in the case. Authorities have not indicated whether speed, weather, or other roadway conditions contributed to the collision.
Officials are urging drivers to use caution when traveling in the area while the investigation continues.
