Rensselaer, IN – A Rensselaer man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he repeatedly battered a woman he was in a relationship with, leaving her with visible injuries.

According to the Rensselaer Police Department, officers encountered 36-year-old Colton Johnson on November 4 in the 700 block of North McKinley Street while serving an outstanding theft warrant from Tippecanoe County. After taking him into custody, officers returned the vehicle keys to his residence, where they found a woman with apparent injuries.

Police say the woman told officers that Johnson had allegedly beaten her several times in recent weeks. She reportedly suffered bruising and missing teeth from being struck with a closed fist. Investigators obtained a video that allegedly showed a violent assault occurring just days earlier. Two small children were seen in the footage screaming and attempting to protect the woman during the incident.

The woman reportedly said she had not contacted police earlier out of fear that Johnson would kill her if she did.

According to authorities, Johnson was booked into the Jasper County Jail and faces additional charges including two counts of aggravated battery (level 3 felony), four counts of domestic battery with a prior conviction (level 5 felony), and one count of domestic battery committed in the presence of a child (level 6 felony).

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
