Rensselaer, IN – A 39-year-old Rensselaer man was taken into custody Thursday night after police say he allegedly fired a gun during an argument and later barricaded himself inside a home.

According to the Rensselaer Police Department, officers responded around 7:47 p.m. on Oct. 9 to reports of shots fired in the 400 block of North McKinley Street. Witnesses told police the suspect, identified as Shawn McGan, allegedly reached inside his waistband and fired at another person before leaving the scene. McGan also reportedly threatened to burn the house down before fleeing.

Officers from Rensselaer and Jasper County—along with several off-duty responders—searched the area and located McGan inside a residence on East Elm Street. Police surrounded the home and later observed movement inside. After several minutes of negotiation, McGan exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

A search warrant was granted, and police recovered a handgun allegedly used in the shooting. The firearm had been reported stolen earlier this year from another location in Rensselaer, authorities said.

McGan was booked into the Jasper County Jail and charged Friday, Oct. 10, with attempted murder (Level 1 felony), criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon (Level 6 felony), and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (Level 4 felony).

Police said additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
