Keener Township, IN – Firefighters from multiple Jasper County and northwest Indiana departments responded overnight to a working structure fire at a home under construction in Keener Township, successfully stopping the flames before they could spread further into the residence.

According to the Keener Township Volunteer Fire Department, crews were dispatched after reports of a working fire, with Keener EMS arriving quickly on scene and providing an initial size-up. Fire officials said the blaze was already well involved in the garage area and had begun extending into the main structure when firefighters arrived.

Engine 112 was the first unit on scene and immediately deployed two handlines to begin fire attack and knock down the main body of fire. Command 1101 requested additional resources as a precaution, bringing in mutual aid from Wheatfield, Rensselaer, Lake, and Lincoln Township volunteer fire departments. Hebron VFD also provided standby coverage at the Keener station during the incident.

Fire officials said the home was under construction at the time, which helped crews transition safely to an interior attack. That effort allowed firefighters to bring the fire under control and prevent further damage to the structure.

Units remained on scene for approximately four hours handling suppression, overhaul, and ensuring no additional hotspots remained.

No injuries were reported.

Officials credited the coordinated response and teamwork between agencies for the efficient and safe outcome. Assistance was also provided by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, DeMotte Police Department, and dispatchers from both DeMotte and Jasper County.

Residents in Jasper County and surrounding northwest Indiana communities are reminded to report smoke or fire conditions immediately and to use caution around construction sites, where fire risks can increase.
