Jasper County, IN – Two drivers were injured Wednesday evening after a two-vehicle crash at a busy Jasper County intersection, prompting a medical helicopter response and temporary traffic disruption along U.S. Highway 231.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 5:46 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, reporting a crash at U.S. Highway 231 and County Road 600 North, an area frequently traveled by commuters between Rensselaer and surrounding rural communities.

Authorities said a 2016 Buick passenger vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old DeMotte man, was traveling southbound on U.S. 231 when it was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet truck driven by a 75-year-old man traveling westbound on County Road 600 North. Investigators said the westbound vehicle failed to yield the right of way and entered the path of the southbound car.

The Buick driver was extricated from the vehicle by the Rensselaer Fire Department and airlifted by Lutheran Air to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, with injuries described as significant. The Chevrolet driver was transported by Keener Township Medics to Franciscan Health Crown Point for treatment of his injuries.

Sheriff’s officials noted that both drivers were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed in both vehicles, factors that may have helped prevent more severe outcomes.

The crash occurred in Jasper County, located northwest of Rensselaer and within the broader northwest Indiana region, not far from the Illinois state line. No additional details on charges or citations were immediately released.

Drivers are reminded to use caution at rural intersections and to yield appropriately, especially during evening hours when visibility can be reduced.
