Jasper County, IN – A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 231 near County Road 700 North sent one person to the hospital Monday afternoon, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 1:05 p.m. CST on February 2, 2026. Deputies responded after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting a collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle north of Rensselaer.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the semi-tractor/trailer was driven by 61-year-old Dwain Pitts of Lowell, Indiana. Pitts was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 231 when a southbound passenger vehicle, driven by 70-year-old Ronald Saunders of Rensselaer, allegedly crossed into his lane.

Preliminary findings indicate that Saunders’ vehicle left the roadway, overcorrected, and entered the path of the semi-trailer, resulting in a collision.

Keener Township Medics transported Saunders to a local hospital for treatment, while Pitts reported no injuries. Deputies noted that both drivers were using seatbelts, and airbags deployed in the passenger vehicle.

The Indiana State Police will continue investigating the cause of the crash.
