Jamestown, New York – Drivers across the Western Southern Tier should prepare now for icy stretches on I-86 and Route 60 as light freezing rain develops between 7 a.m. and midday Tuesday, with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice possible before temperatures rise above freezing this afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday for the Southern Tier. Light freezing rain will spread from south to north through the morning hours, creating slippery conditions on untreated roads, parking lots and sidewalks.
Ice accumulations are expected to remain under 0.10 inch, but even a thin glaze can create hazardous travel. Elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses along I-86, Route 219 and NY-417 will freeze first as temperatures hover near 32 degrees.
Communities including Jamestown, Olean and Wellsville may experience the most persistent icing through late morning. Farther north toward Dunkirk and areas near I-90, precipitation may fall as plain rain sooner, reducing the ice threat.
Road crews are monitoring conditions, but motorists should reduce speed, increase following distance and use caution on ramps and secondary roads. Pedestrians should watch for slick sidewalks and untreated surfaces.
Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing by mid to late afternoon, allowing ice to gradually melt. However, shaded areas may remain slick until temperatures rise more significantly. Additional updates will be issued if ice accumulations increase beyond current expectations.
