Jamestown, NY – Residents across the Southern Tier are being warned to prepare for dangerous winter weather as a prolonged lake-effect snowstorm moves into the region early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Monday through 4 p.m. Wednesday for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming counties. Snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches are expected, with wind gusts up to 50 mph producing blowing and drifting snow.

The most severe conditions are expected along Interstate 86, Route 60, and Route 17, where snowbands may intensify rapidly. Forecasters warn that snowfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour, leading to sudden whiteouts and dangerously slick roads.

The hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Monday evening through Wednesday morning commutes, with travel becoming very difficult or potentially life-threatening at times.

Strong winds may also cause isolated power outages, while overnight wind chills dropping to 5 to 15 below zero could pose additional risks for anyone stranded outdoors or in vehicles.

Residents are encouraged to avoid travel during peak snowfall periods, submit snow reports to help forecasters track conditions, and stay alert for rapidly changing weather.
