Jacksonville, Fla. – Sweltering heat will blanket northeast Florida and southeast Georgia today, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for the region until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Heat index values are expected to climb as high as 110 degrees, putting thousands at risk for heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the advisory covers a wide swath—including Duval, Nassau, St. Johns, Columbia, Marion, and Suwannee counties in Florida, along with Camden, Glynn, and Ware counties in Georgia. The highest heat will settle over cities like Jacksonville, Gainesville, Palm Coast, and Waycross. Road crews, outdoor workers, and children at summer camps should take immediate precautions as the combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents are urged to drink extra fluids, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and check in on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers remain open in Jacksonville and several county libraries for those needing relief. Officials recommend wearing light, loose clothing and limiting time in direct sunlight.

Today’s heat event matches the hottest July stretches on record, rivaling the 2019 heat wave. The advisory will be re-evaluated this evening, with more alerts possible if dangerous heat lingers through the week.
