Jackson, Mississippi – Drivers across much of central Mississippi should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Wednesday morning as dense fog develops before sunrise and lingers through mid-morning, sharply reducing visibility on roads across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, dense fog is expected between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in many locations. The fog threat is classified as an Elevated Level 2 risk, covering a large portion of the state including Jackson, Vicksburg, Yazoo City, Greenville, Meridian, Brookhaven, Hattiesburg, and surrounding communities.

The most dangerous conditions are expected during the early morning commute, particularly along major routes such as Interstate 20, Interstate 55, Interstate 59, and Highway 49. Rural roads and low-lying areas may see sudden visibility drops, leaving little time for drivers to react.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. High beams can reflect off fog droplets and further reduce visibility. Allowing extra time to reach destinations is strongly recommended, especially for school and work travel.

The fog is expected to gradually lift late Wednesday morning as temperatures rise and mixing improves. Until then, travel impacts remain likely. The National Weather Service says additional statements may be issued if fog becomes more widespread or persists longer than expected.
