Jackson, Mississippi – A dangerous heat wave will grip Mississippi on Thursday, with parts of the state facing life-threatening conditions as heat index values soar between 110 and 120 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, much of central and western Mississippi, including Jackson, Vicksburg, and Brookhaven, will fall under a Level 3 Significant Heat Stress alert. Actual air temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees, dramatically increasing the risk of heat-related illness and heat stroke, especially for those working or exercising outdoors.
Eastern portions of the state, including Meridian and Philadelphia, are under an Elevated (Level 2) risk, where temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indices up to 110 are expected. Residents in these zones are urged to avoid prolonged exposure, stay indoors if possible, and drink plenty of water.
The combination of heat and humidity will push the body’s limits, especially in urban areas where cooling may be less accessible. Never leave children or pets in vehicles—even briefly. The last time heat indices reached this level in the region was during the July 2021 extreme heat event.
More advisories could follow as the heat wave persists into the weekend.
