Jackson, Mississippi – One more night of freezing temperatures is expected across much of Mississippi before a pronounced warming trend brings springlike conditions to the region by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, widespread freezing temperatures are forecast again tonight, marking the final cold night before temperatures begin rising steadily through the remainder of the week. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s, which could impact sensitive plants and create cold conditions for early-morning travel.

Beginning Thursday, temperatures are forecast to rebound quickly, with daytime highs climbing into the 50s and 60s, followed by above-normal temperatures this weekend and into early next week. Forecasters say some locations may reach the lower to mid-70s by Saturday and Sunday, particularly across central and southern Mississippi.

Major travel corridors including Interstate 55, Interstate 20, Interstate 59, and U.S. Highway 61 will experience the full range of temperature changes, from freezing conditions overnight to warm afternoons by the weekend. While no winter precipitation is expected, motorists traveling early Thursday morning may notice cold pavement conditions following the overnight freeze.

The National Weather Service notes that the warming trend will be accompanied by generally dry weather, reducing the likelihood of travel disruptions. The shift to warmer temperatures may also lead to increased outdoor activity and higher traffic volumes along interstate corridors as residents take advantage of the mild conditions.

Forecasters emphasize that the return to above-normal temperatures does not appear temporary, with mild conditions expected to persist into early next week. No watches or warnings are currently in effect related to the warming trend.

The temperature swing may be especially noticeable for students, commuters, and outdoor workers traveling along I-55 through the Jackson metro area, particularly during the transition from cold mornings to warm afternoons.

This outlook is based on forecast guidance updated Wednesday morning and will be refined as additional data becomes available.
