Jackson, Mississippi – An elevated threat for dangerously cold conditions is expected to develop across central Mississippi Friday night and persist into the weekend, prompting safety concerns for residents across the Jackson area.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, much of Mississippi is under a Level 2 (Elevated) cold risk, signaling a higher potential for impacts from prolonged cold exposure. Forecast guidance indicates wind chills around 15 degrees or colder, with overnight low temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees across the region.

Daytime conditions will also remain cold. Forecasters note that high temperatures may stay below 32 degrees in parts of northwest Mississippi, limiting daytime thawing and allowing cold-related hazards to persist throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service warns that hypothermia is possible with prolonged exposure, particularly for those without adequate shelter or cold-weather protection. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without reliable heating, may be at greater risk during this period.

The cold could also affect infrastructure, especially exposed pipes, which are at risk of freezing if not properly protected. Residents are encouraged to take precautions ahead of time, including insulating pipes and checking heating systems.

While this update does not focus on winter precipitation, the extended cold may still impact roadway conditions, especially overnight. Any residual moisture on road surfaces could refreeze, creating slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and lightly traveled roads.

Drivers traveling overnight or early in the morning should use caution on major routes including Interstate 55, Interstate 20, and Interstate 220, where freezing temperatures may lead to hazardous driving conditions even in dry weather.

The National Weather Service urges residents to continue monitoring forecast updates as the weekend approaches and to take steps now to protect people, pets, pipes, and property from the expected cold.

Commuters, outdoor workers, and weekend travelers in the Jackson area should plan accordingly for dangerously cold conditions beginning Friday night.
