Jackson, Mississippi – Today is Sunday, and severe storms are moving across central and southern Mississippi through early morning hours.
According to the US National Weather Service in Jackson, a Slight Risk (Level 2) of severe weather is in place for portions of central and southern Mississippi. A Marginal Risk (Level 1) extends farther north, including areas near Yazoo City and Greenwood.
Forecasters say severe storms are possible with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for tornadoes. The greatest threat window is occurring now through 3 a.m. in western and central portions of the state, shifting east between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Communities along the Interstate 55 corridor, including Jackson and Brookhaven, may experience strong wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines. Farther east along Interstate 20 toward Meridian, storms are expected during the pre-dawn hours.
The agency states that isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, particularly in areas under the Level 2 risk zone extending south toward Hattiesburg and along U.S. Highway 49.
Residents are urged to stay updated on the forecast and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings overnight, including weather radios and mobile alerts.
Overnight travelers and early-morning commuters along I-55 and I-20 could encounter hazardous driving conditions as storms move through.
Additional updates are expected as the line of storms progresses eastward across Mississippi.
