Jackson, Mississippi – Severe storms capable of 60 mph winds and possible tornadoes could impact Interstate 55 after midnight Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather is in place Saturday night into early Sunday morning for portions of central and southwestern Mississippi. Areas farther east remain under a Marginal Risk (Level 1).

Forecasters say the greatest severe threat will develop mostly after midnight and continue through the early morning hours Sunday. The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and possible tornadoes. Isolated severe storms are possible outside the Slight Risk zone.

The best chances for stronger storms are expected across southwestern Mississippi and into southeastern Louisiana before shifting eastward toward Jackson, Vicksburg, and Meridian between approximately 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Communities along Interstate 20, Interstate 55, Interstate 59, and U.S. Highway 98 should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions during the overnight hours.

Officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially while sleeping. Outdoor sirens may not wake everyone, and mobile alerts should be enabled before bedtime.

Early morning commuters, shift workers, and churchgoers Sunday may encounter storm-related disruptions.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and review severe weather safety plans before storms arrive.
