Jackson, Mississippi – Drivers across central and southern Mississippi face visibility dropping to one-quarter mile or less along Interstate 55 and Interstate 20 through 8 a.m. Friday, creating sudden slowdowns during the morning commute. Fog has developed in pockets statewide, with locally dense areas forming near rivers, low-lying terrain and open fields.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, areas of fog will continue through 8 a.m., with some locations briefly seeing visibility reduced to 500 feet or less. The greatest impacts are expected along and west of I-55, including Vicksburg and Natchez, but patchy dense fog is also affecting Meridian along I-20 and Hattiesburg near US-98.
Transportation officials urge drivers to use low-beam headlights, reduce speeds and increase following distance. Avoid high beams, which can reflect off fog and further limit visibility. Allow extra travel time, especially on bridges and elevated roadways where moisture can linger longer.
Once the fog lifts midmorning, skies will turn partly sunny with seasonably warm temperatures climbing into the 70s across much of the state. Dry conditions are expected to dominate through the weekend, limiting rainfall chances and allowing above-average warmth to persist into early next week.
Motorists should remain alert through the early commute, as visibility can change rapidly over short distances. Additional statements may be issued if fog redevelops before sunrise or lingers beyond 8 a.m. Friday.
