Jackson, Mississippi – Dense fog may reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less across parts of Mississippi early Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions along major roadways.

According to the US National Weather Service in Jackson, areas of dense fog are likely to develop overnight and persist through Tuesday morning, especially east of Interstate 55. The greatest impacts are expected between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Forecasters classify much of eastern and southeastern Mississippi, including Meridian, Laurel and Hattiesburg, under an elevated Level 2 fog risk. Patchy fog with visibility between one-quarter and one-half mile is possible farther west, including areas near Vicksburg and Greenville.

Low temperatures are expected to range from the mid-40s to lower 50s overnight, slightly above seasonal averages. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will continue as fog develops across the region.

Drivers along I-55, I-20, US-49 and US-82 should prepare for rapidly changing visibility, particularly in low-lying and rural areas. Transportation officials advise using low-beam headlights, increasing following distance and allowing extra time to reach destinations.

Morning commuters and school bus routes could experience slower travel where visibility drops below one-quarter mile.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 9 a.m. as daytime heating helps lift the fog.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and exercise caution during the Tuesday morning commute.
