Mississippi starts the morning wrapped in a gray, quiet haze as dense fog settles across parts of the state. Headlights glow softly through the mist, and familiar roads fade quickly into the distance.
The National Weather Service in Jackson reports areas of dense fog ongoing across southern Mississippi, with patchy dense fog extending into central Louisiana and southeastern Mississippi. Visibility may drop below a half mile at times, with pockets falling to a quarter mile or less. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through 9 a.m. for portions of southeast Mississippi.
Conditions are especially tricky during the early commute. Drivers may encounter sudden visibility drops with little warning, particularly along rural highways and low-lying areas. Wet pavement combined with fog can make it harder to judge distance and speed.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. To be fair, fog coverage will vary by location, but even brief dense patches can create dangerous situations.
Improvement is expected later this morning as temperatures rise and mixing increases. Still, lingering fog may persist in sheltered areas longer than expected. Allow extra time if traveling before mid-morning.
Looking ahead, Mississippi remains in a mild January pattern, with above-normal temperatures continuing through the week. This warmth can promote overnight fog development, especially after calm, moist evenings. Another round of fog is possible tonight in some areas if winds remain light.
For families heading back to school routines and commuters returning after the holiday break, caution is key. This is also the time of year when rapid weather changes catch drivers off guard.
Stay alert, check local conditions before heading out, and be ready for visibility to change fast.
