JACKSON, Miss. — A dangerous winter weather pattern is unfolding across central Mississippi today, with the Jackson area facing an ice storm followed by extreme cold that could persist into early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say freezing rain and sleet will overspread the Jackson metro area after 6 p.m. Saturday, with impacts increasing overnight as colder air pushes south. Ice accumulation is expected to worsen through Sunday, creating hazardous travel conditions and increasing the risk of widespread power outages.

The National Weather Service classifies much of central Mississippi, including Jackson, under a Significant (Level 3) winter storm impact, while areas north of the city are under Extreme (Level 4) impacts. Officials warn that roads may become dangerous or impassable, particularly bridges and elevated surfaces, as ice builds on roadways.

Ice accumulation from freezing rain and sleet may bring extended power outages, with downed trees and power lines possible. Residents are urged to complete preparations before conditions deteriorate and to avoid unnecessary travel once icing begins.

As the ice storm tapers late Sunday, dangerous cold will settle in, intensifying Sunday night and Monday. Forecasts indicate wind chills near or below 10°F across Jackson, with colder values to the north. The coldest conditions are expected Sunday night and Monday night, when frostbite may occur in as little as 30 minutes or less with prolonged exposure.

The National Weather Service warns that exposed pipes may freeze and burst, potentially leading to water main breaks. Residents are advised to protect pipes, pets, plants, and people, and to prepare for possible extended power disruptions during the cold.

Officials stress that winter weather impacts will continue to shift southward through Sunday, with precipitation lingering across much of the region. Mississippians are urged to monitor forecasts closely, limit travel, and take precautions as the storm and extreme cold unfold.
