Jackson, MS – Residents across central and western Mississippi should prepare for severe thunderstorms tonight as a cold front moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson.

Forecasters warn that storms could bring damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and a few brief tornadoes, mainly between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. The NWS has placed much of the area under a Slight Risk (Level 2) for severe weather.

According to the NWS update, the strongest storms are expected to develop this evening across areas including Vicksburg, Jackson, and Greenwood, then move east overnight toward Meridian and surrounding counties.

The weather service urges residents to stay alert to changing conditions, review safety plans, and ensure weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices. Overnight timing increases risk for residents who may be asleep when warnings are issued.

Drivers and outdoor workers are also advised to monitor conditions closely, as strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, leading to scattered outages or blocked roadways.

Updates and warnings will be posted by @NWSJacksonMS and through weather.gov/JAN throughout the night.
