Jackson and much of central Mississippi are starting Monday under dangerous arctic cold, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory through 9 AM. Early-morning temperatures have fallen into the teens to lower 20s, while wind chills are running between 10 and 15 degrees, with a few spots briefly dropping into the single digits.

The coldest conditions are being felt early this morning, especially northwest of the Natchez Trace, where wind chills are lowest. Southeast of the Trace, conditions are still harsh, with wind chills hovering in the upper teens to near 20 degrees. This level of cold is unusual for the region and poses a real risk of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged outdoor exposure.

Forecasters stress the importance of protecting the “four P’s” — people, pets, plants, and pipes. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets have warm shelter indoors. Homeowners should allow faucets to drip and insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing, especially in poorly insulated areas.

Temperatures will gradually recover later this morning as sunshine increases, but Monday afternoon highs will still struggle to climb out of the 20s and lower 30s in many locations. Winds will ease somewhat, reducing wind chill impacts, but conditions will remain cold throughout the day.

Tonight, temperatures will again dip into the teens and lower 20s, keeping freeze concerns in place. While the most dangerous cold is confined to Monday morning, residents should remain cautious through tonight.
