JACKSON, Miss. – Central Mississippi braces for dangerous heat today as an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values expected to soar as high as 115 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, dangerously hot and humid air will grip much of the state, including cities such as Madison, Greenwood, Vicksburg, Greenville, Yazoo City, and Jackson. The heat warning also stretches into northeast Louisiana.
Health risks rise significantly under these conditions, with heat-related illnesses likely for anyone outdoors too long or without adequate cooling. Roads, outdoor job sites, and athletic fields could see the brunt of the impacts, with emergency officials urging residents to avoid non-essential outdoor activity.
Preparedness tips include drinking plenty of fluids, checking on elderly neighbors, and finding air-conditioned spaces. Residents are urged to limit time in direct sunlight, especially during peak afternoon hours when the heat index will be highest.
The warning is set to expire tonight, but temperatures will remain hot into the weekend. Highs in Jackson are forecast in the 90s through Sunday, with only scattered storms to offer brief relief.
