Jackson, MI – Consumers Energy is urging Michigan residents to be alert after reports of scammers this week impersonating company representatives and demanding immediate payments under the threat of service shut-offs.
According to a release from Consumers Energy on Thursday, scammers have been calling and emailing customers, pressuring them to pay overdue balances through prepaid debit cards or gift cards. The criminals are reportedly spoofing company phone numbers to appear legitimate, telling people their power or gas service will be cut off unless they comply.
“We know most people are already careful not to give their money and personal information to strangers, but we want to make sure they’re alert for these criminals who are persistent and determined to con people out of their earnings,” said Jim Beechey, Consumers Energy’s vice president of information technology and security.
The utility reminded customers that it never demands specific payment methods such as prepaid debit cards, nor does it request credit card information over the phone. Instead, the company directs people to its secure online system or its toll-free line at 800-477-5050 for legitimate billing matters.
Consumers Energy advised customers who already made payments to potential scammers to call the same number so the company can collect details. Those who did not make payments but received suspicious calls are urged to file reports with local law enforcement.
The company stressed that anyone asked for personal information by someone claiming to be from Consumers Energy should hang up and immediately contact the utility.
Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, supplies natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million residents across the Lower Peninsula. The company said it remains committed to protecting customers while ensuring reliable service.
