Jackson, Kentucky – Prolonged cold conditions will continue across eastern Kentucky through the weekend, with sub-zero wind chills and periods of light snow expected to increase travel and exposure risks.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, cold daytime highs and overnight lows will allow single-digit to sub-zero wind chills to persist at times from Friday through Sunday. The lowest wind chill values are expected this weekend, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

In addition to the cold, forecasters say a couple of passing weather systems will bring light snow accumulations to much of eastern Kentucky from Friday through Saturday night, along with reinforcing shots of Arctic air. Snowfall rates are expected to remain light, generally around a quarter inch per hour or less, but steady snow could still create slick conditions.

The highest probabilities for at least one inch of snow are focused across southeastern portions of the region, while areas farther northwest may see lighter totals. Exact snowfall amounts remain uncertain at this time.

Travel impacts are most likely along key routes such as KY-15, U.S. Highway 23, the Mountain Parkway, and Interstate 75, where cold pavement temperatures and light snow could lead to icy spots, especially overnight.

The NWS notes that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less during periods of sub-zero wind chills. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Pets should be brought indoors, and pipes should be protected from freezing.

This forecast is especially important for commuters, school transportation, outdoor workers, and residents in higher elevations, where cold and snow impacts may be more pronounced.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecasts and possible cold weather headlines as Arctic air remains in place through the weekend.
